We Optimize User and Conformance Journeys

Who drives the team?

Monica Cooks

Experience Optimization Lead

Monica’s keen interest in process and optimization evolved in the legal industry. She worked as a legal secretary in 1995 and over the years took on different roles that shaped her knowledge of legal processes and legal technologies. She was introduced to document sciences in 2002 when she joined a document formatting support team in a prominent South African law firm. There she navigated the challenging, but interesting complexities of large document formatting projects, a solid foundation for the journey ahead.

Her advanced understanding of word processors and legal experience unlocked opportunities in systems training, template development, knowledge managent, and a transformative experience in document automation. Business analysis and user experience design is at the heart of her user-centered approach to solution design.

After many adventures Monica established MatterCues in 2019. Since then then the team expanded, offering clients, across different industries, an integrated optimization and conformance experience.

Amie Lane

Conformance and ISO Lead

Amie's keen interest in process and conformance started when she worked in a quality management support role in 2005. There she had the privilege to learn from experts in the field and it was not long before she knew that she had found her happy space. Over the years she broadened her ISO scope to include various different certifications and worked with many industry experts who supported and shaped her career.

Amie's passion for conformance, her extensive experience and relevant qualifications led her to be recognized as a senior manager in the industry. This empowered Amie to confidently support and guide clients across various industries through their conformance and certification journeys.

After many adventures, Amie established her own startup in 2020. After collaborating with MatterCues on many projects in the legal industry over the years, Amie and Monica joined forces, offering clients, across different industries, an integrated optimization and conformance experience.

The Founder's Journey

  • 1995 +My world of law

I'm excited to be given an opportunity to work as a junior debt collection secretary, working in a small team, but learning from someone who inspires me. This sets the scene for my career in the legal industry and I soon find a keen interest in labour law. As a senior labour law secretary I work for an industry best, and learn about the ins and outs of supporting a practice. After a few years as a secretary, and some studies, I was given a great opportunity to move into an industrial relations consultant role. These different roles set me up with first hand user experience in different contexts, which serves me well in the years to come.
  • 2002 +Discover the art of advanced document formatting, an investment for life!

I'm working in a large South Africa's law firm, thankful to work with the best, with exposure to large scale projects. I learn about the intricacies of document formatting and appreciate that it is an art, a unique combination of in-depth word processing experience and a feel for brand, consistency, an eye for detail and overall quality. It became impossible not to look forward to the next formatting challenge. This is the start of something great, something that becomes a hobby more than just my job, something that would shape my future!
  • 2008 +Empower others through knowledge sharing

I have a passion for what I do and I now have the opportunity to share it with others. I appreciate the importance of a user centric approach to designing learning journeys, tailored to the needs of specific user groups and individuals, empowering others to confidently engage in systems-related tasks within their own contexts. Knowledge empowers, but applied knowledge is key to driving efficiency!
  • 2009 +Step into the world of document automation

Exciting times ahead! I can now take things one step further and automate our manual ways! I appreciate that document automation pairs well with my in-depth knowledge of document styles and formatting, and I learn about document automation as the next layer to efficient drafting. Using document assembly tools, I am able to design questionnaire that dynamically updates document content based on how a user completes the questionnaire. In this way I empower users to produce tailored quality documents at an instance, not only saving time, but also taking care of underlying stylistic preferences in these documents.
  • 2010 +Leap of faith across the industry, broadening my perspective

I consult to law firms and companies in other industries, providing document automation and training services. Through this, I learn about new ways of working, to fresh approaches for solving the same problems. It instills a new appreciation for industry standards and needs across industries.
  • 2013 +A better understanding of client needs through business analysis

I obtain formal Business Analysis qualifications and work as a Business Analyst in a large law firm. I learn how to assess client needs, asking quality questions to get quality information, to design meaningful solutions. In taking on this new skill with my legal technology background, I gain insights into how document automation fits into a bigger process, and how opportunities exist to streamline the bigger process, beyond the scope of the document produced as an artifact to a process. And so, another building block falls into place, where the principles of Business Analysis complement my document automation journey, enriching my solution design efforts to encompass elements of both process and document automation.
  • 2016 +Document automation with a scenario driven focus

During this time, corporate practice teams in the legal industry started showing a keen interest in document automation, where previously, these teams typically preferred to rely more on manual drafting styles. This paved the way for complex automation projects involving questionnaires that can cater for different scenarios, dynamically updating document content to produce only the relevant clauses needed by the user for a particular scenario, in a particular context. To achieve this, I work closely with knowledge experts to introduce them to the concept of document automation in their areas of law, helping them understand what is required to prepare legal documents for automation.
  • 2019 +Establish MatterCues, a leap of faith

I feel ready, excited, and hopeful to create a platform through which I can share what I've learnt, continue to learn as MatterCues grows, love what I do and make meaningful impacts. MatterCues is established in June 2019, with an initial focus on document automation and related process improvement services as a solid foundation for what comes next.
  • 2020 +ContexTools, a MatterCues brand

I use my keen interest in macros, styles and template design to productize some of my concepts. MatterCues launches ContexTools, a MatterCues brand, reserved for a range of nifty tools to streamline the way clients do document drafting and editing. The first ContexTool is launched – assigna4mat - helping clients to document smarter.
  • 2020 +MatterCues steps into ISO and Business Management Systems

I team up with Karmic Business Solutions, a company specializing in the implementation of ISO standards (International Organization for Standardization). An exciting new venture unfolds when we channel our joint experience in process design into driving quality management through knowledge management principles.
  • 2021 +Expand the MatterCues in-house crew

Amie steps onboard, opening an exciting new ISO offering to clients across different industries - an integrated optimization and conformance experience.
